Curtiss-Wright signs contract with Boeing

Curtiss-Wright Corporation has been selected by The Boeing Company to provide emergent and specialty production support for the final assembly and delivery of the 787 Dreamliner in South Carolina.

US Steel inks deal with Lambda

US Steel Corporation’s tubular products subsidiary, US Steel Tubular Products Inc, has entered into an agreement with Surface Enhancement Technologies, part of Lambda Technologies Group, to improve the quality of its tubular steel products. As per the agreement, US Steel has received an exclusive permit by SET to use its patented low plasticity burnishing technology

Manitoba nickel mine to restart

Crowflight Minerals will resume operations at its Bucko Lake Mine. The company intends to mine 220,000tns of ore in 2011, with the intention of producing approximately 5 million pounds of nickel. Capital expenditures in 2011 at Bucko Lake Mine are budgeted at USD 15 million. Of that, USD 6 million is for the acquisition of mining equipment and USD 9 million for mine development

Vale shareholders nominate new CEO

Vale’s controlling shareholders have nominated one of its former executive directors, Murilo Pinto de Oliveira Ferreira, as president of the company, replacing the current CEO Roger Agnelli. The nomination is subject to approval of Vale's board of directors. Murilo Ferreira joined Vale in 1998

Mroz, new pres and CEO of Yokogawa America

Yokogawa Electric Corporation has appointed Chester J. Mroz as the next president and CEO of Yokogawa Corporation of America. A veteran of the process automation industry, Mroz will be responsible for overseeing all Yokogawa business operations in North America. He has held several engineering, managerial, consulting, and senior executive positions

Sandmeyer appoints two new VP’s

Sandmeyer Steel Company (Sandmeyer) has appointed John M. Curley, III, as the Vice President of International Sales and Global Marketing, a newly created position in the company. In his new role he will oversee the development of business outside of the United States, a quickly expanding market for Sandmeyer.

Electric arc furnace course held in Argentina

The 2nd International Short Course on Electric Arc Furnace was held at the Plaza Real Suites Hotel, Rosario, Argentina, from 29-30 March 2011. Organized by consulting and training company Metallon, the event was attended by steelmakers and foundrymen from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Paolo Rocca wins steelmaker of the year award

Paolo Rocca, CEO of the Techint Group and chairman of its Tenaris and Ternium steel manufacturing operations, will be named “Steelmaker of the Year” at AISTech 2011. Taking place 2-5 May 2011, The Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition, managed by the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) will showcase over 400 papers on iron and steel technology.

Vestas wins 150MW order in Brazil

Vestas has received an order for 150MW for several projects in Brazil. The order is scheduled for completion by December 2012. As per the contract, Vestas will provide 75 x 2MW platform turbines to be placed in the region of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil. The platform turbines will be used in the Ventos de Sao Miguel, Renascença I, Renascença II, Renascença III and Renascença IV projects.

Sperling Industries invests in expansion

Structural steel fabricator, Sperling Industries will invest USD 10 million to construct a new automated fabricated structural steel plant. Based in Sperling, Manitoba, Canada, the company will begin construction on the new 35,000 sq/ft facility shortly; Sperling executives are already looking to bid on planned construction projects in Manitoba.
