Applications

Stainless steels are a suitable materials for many applications where both the strength of steel and corrosion resistance are required. It is resistant to corrosion, staining and stainless steel can be rolled into sheets, plates, bars, wire, and tubing for a variety of applications. Below you can find news on the application of stainless steels in a broad variety of industries, such as architecture, oil and gas, shipbuilding and heat exchangers. If you wish to include your newsrelease on Stainless Steel World Americas and email newsletter, please feel free to contact us.

ABB acquires Power-One

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, and Power-One, Inc., a leading provider of renewable energy and of energy-efficient power conversion and power management solutions, confirmed that ABB has completed its previously announced acquisition of Power-One.

UPM acquires Vulcanium

United Performance Metals, Inc. (UPM), a subsidiary O’Neal Industries, has acquired the assets of Vulcanium Metals, a leading stock/distributor and processor of titanium for aerospace and defense, medical instruments and other industrial applications based in Northbrook, Illinois.

Exova expands corrosion services

newsitemA leading oil & gas metallurgical testing laboratory in Houston has expanded its corrosion testing capabilities. Extensive investments have been made in the Exova Houston lab including new high pressure / high temperature (HPHT) autoclaves, slow strain rate frames and state of the art electrochemical testing capability. The expansion in capabilities and capacities has been made in response to increased global emphasis on tackling the problem of pipeline corrosion – an issue that costs the oil and gas industry millions of dollars annually. The electrochemical cell addition will allow more sophisticated test procedure parameters to be utilized for optimal simulation of corrosive environments and conditions. “Exova Houston has seen increased demand thanks (to) the exploration of oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico in more hostile environments, at higher pressures and in increasingly sour environments,” said vice president, US, Materials, Oil & Gas, Bobby Archibald.

Spirit AeroSystems and NTiC achieve aerospace mile

Norsk Titanium Components AS (NTiC) and Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. have reached a significant milestone in a multi-year collaboration for Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) technology. Together the companies have achieved technology readiness level six (TRL6), demonstrating the ability to meet aerospace material requirements.

PERLASTIC acquired by Global Polymer Solutions

Global Polymer Solutions LLC has acquired the global rights to Perlastic™ industrial protective coatings products. PERLASTIC is a line of water-based, zero-VOC protective coatings which adhere directly to rust or substrates where limited surface preparation is possible.

Altus sells Thermafiber to Owens Corning

Altus Capital Partners, Inc., a private equity investment firm focused on niche middle market manufacturing companies in the U.S., has announced the closing of the sale of Thermafiber, Inc., a leading producer of mineral wool insulation products for commercial, industrial and horticultural applications, to Owens Corning, a leading global producer of residential and commercial building materials, glass-fiber reinforcements and engineered materials for composite systems.
