Essar Steel is planning to invest INR 1000crore to set up steel processing units in India, the Middle East and North America. The company is in the process of expanding capacity of its steel plant located in Hazira to 10 million tonnes from 4.6 million tonnes at an investment of around INR 14,000crore. The expanded capacity is likely to go on stream by June next year. Essar plans to set up 15-20 steel processing units to meet the specific steel requirement of auto, white goods and small and medium enterprises sector over a span of three years. It has four such units in India with a combined processing capacity of 2.5 million tonnes. The company had announced that they will set up Greenfield steel projects in Vietnam, Trinidad and Tobago and Minnesota in the US.
