Toshiba Corp.’s US subsidiary has agreed to build the two new 1400MW nuclear plants for the South Texas Project, a nuclear power facility being expanded by NRG Energy Inc. and CPS Energy. The plants will use advanced boiling water reactors. Westinghouse Electric Co., a unit of Toshiba, will take part in the project. The South Texas Project expansion recently passed several milestones that might make it attractive to existing nuclear operators, or possibly a private equity investor. The expansion project is a finalist in the competition for a federal loan guarantee. The two plants and are slated to start operations in 2016 and 2017.
