July will mark the start-up of steel production at ThyssenKrupp’s 3500-acre site near Mobile, Alabama. When fully operational, the USD 4.65 billion complex will process carbon and stainless steel for the North American market and employ 2700 people. By October, the steelmaker is scheduled to begin cold-rolling operations at its stainless steel facility, which will initially operate at one-third capacity. One of the key features of the company’s stainless-steel operations is a line that has been designed with the capability to provide 72in wide cold-rolled steel. The facility will be one of the only mills in North America with the capability of producing 72in steel. The facility’s melt shop is expected to begin operations in 2012.
