Duplex

    Duplex stainless steels have a ferritic-austenitic microstructure, in roughly equal proportions 50% ferrite and 50% austenite. Duplex combines many of the attractive properties of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels into one. They are designed to provide better corrosion resistance, in particular to stress corrosion and pitting corrosion. The microstructure leads to higher strength than standard austenitic stainless steels such as Type 304 or 316. Duplex stainless steels have become more and more popular in recent years.

    The International Molybdenum Association has published the third edition of “Practical Guidelines for the Fabrication of Duplex Stainless Steels. It has been significantly revised and updated from the second edition published in 2009.

    PVI chooses Outokumpu LDX 2101®

    The American water heater manufacturer, PVI Industries, has selected Outokumpu’s proprietary lean Duplex grade LDX 2101® to replace the carbon steel in its water heaters.

    This metal replacement has significantly reduced PVI Industries’ waste stream and increased the life expectancy of its water heaters, which are used for large commercial end-users like hotels, restaurants, schools, universities and hospitals.
