When it comes to stainless steel, looks are an important aspect that not many people take into consideration. It can influence different characteristics, and its important to know how to choose the best surface for a particular use, among the many different types of finishes.
The different mechanical, electromechanical and chemical finishes of stainless steel, written by Andrea Guderzo, sales director and area manager USA, at Gasparini Industries, examines the range of each finish.
Stainless steel, unlike other metals, contains a certain percentage of chromium. This alloying element creates a film of protective oxide, a few atoms thick. Despite being very thin it is very resistant and prevents corrosion. Also, it regenerates itself: If it is removed or damaged it instantly reforms, Guderzo explains. For these specific reasons, stainless steel can also be used without being painted. There are many finishes that fit the natural aesthetics of steel for use in different contexts and applications.
