Wordsteel announces fifth steelie awards

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) hosted its fifth Steelie Awards ceremony and announced the winners at the annual dinner of the 48th worldsteel conference in Moscow on 6 October. The trophies, known as Steelies, were awarded in seven categories this year.

Edwin Basson, director general of worldsteel said: “The Steelie Awards recognise member companies or individuals for their contribution to the steel industry over a one-year period in a series of categories impacting the steel industry. The areas covered range from communications, technology and education to environment – all areas that are vital for the industry to remain sustainable. It has been five years since we launched the awards in 2000 and we are very pleased with the achievements and progress made by member companies in those areas so far.”

ArcelorMittal secured the website and innovation awards. Gerdau won the sustainability award for their improved scrap supply chain. Tata Steel Europe won the life-cycle assessment (LCA) award for the use of LCA to demonstrate the benefits of steel in bridge designs versus alternative materials. Tenaris’ online learning courses with The University of Sheffield and edX secured them the education and training award.

John Miller of Wall Street Journal was named Journalist of the year and Alexey Mordashov of Severstal was named industry communicator of the year.
