USA: wood biomass plant

Peregrine Energy Corp. has announced that it will build a USD 135 million new wood biomass-fueled power plant at Sonoco’s Hartsville manufacturing complex in South Carolina. The plant is expected to open in 2012. Peregrine, based in Greenville, would build and own a new 50MW plant capable of generating enough electricity to power about 14,000 homes. The biomass-fueled plant will replace Sonoco’s existing coal-fired boilers. Peregrine plans to sell the electrical output and all renewable energy certificates associated with the plant to Progress Energy Carolinas and low pressure steam from the plant to Sonoco to make recycled paperboard and other converted products. The project will use waste logging as the woody biomass fuel for the project.
