Non-destructive testing, commonly referred to as NDT, was first developed in the late 1800s. In the years since, a variety of technologies have been developed, including Eddy Current Testing (ECT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT). These two methods often complement one another when used together. ECT is primarily a surface test with attenuating subsurface flaw detection capability, while UT has the advantage of detection capability deep within materials.
As NDT techniques have expanded, so have the applications which now encompass many critical products that are being used where it is extremely difficult and expensive to replace or repair, or where failure can cause serious and life threatening consequences.
