In this weeks article, The stainless steel market in wastewater treatment written by the Nickel Institute, it is discussed how stainless steel piping has become a standard material of construction for municipal wastewater treatment plants in the United States (U.S.) for more than 25 years. Since the late 1960s, more than 1,600 municipal wastewater treatment plants have been built with stainless steel aeration piping, transfer piping for digester gas and sludge, sliding gates, valves, tanks, screens, handrails, and other equipment.
Stainless steel was selected originally over galvanized and painted carbon steel to reduce the higher maintenance and replacement cost associated with these less corrosion-resistant materials, the Nickel Institute writes. Stainless steel is used for many components within wastewater treatment plants, such as centrifuges, which are gaining market share for de-watering.
