Republic Steel orders EAF and process equipment

SMS Concast, Switzerland has received an order to deliver a 150-ton Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and process equipment from Republic Steel in Cleveland, Ohio. The EAF will be installed in Lorain, Ohio.
“This expansion will help us maintain our position as the industry leader in the manufacturing of SBQ. The additional capacity from the new furnace will allow us more flexibility and efficiency in delivering the highly engineered products our customers require,” said Republic Steel President and CEO, Jaime Vigil.

The new electric arc furnace will increase the company’s annual liquid steel production by 1.2 million tons. It has a 150-short ton heating volume, a 120/135-MVA furnace transformer as well as eccentric bottom tapping and oxy-fuel burners.

The new furnace will feed Republic Steel´s bloom and billet casters for the production of 7.5 to 165 milimeter diameter SBQ flat steel and bar coil, and 152, 280, 305 and 355 milimeter diameter seamless tube rounds.

Republic Steel will tap the first furnace heat in the second quarter of 2013.
