Outokumpu’s Calvert Mill Recognized for Advancing Low-Emission Logistics

Outokumpu’s Calvert Mill has been named an Innovation Award recipient in Norfolk Southern’s fourth annual Thoroughbred Sustainability Partner Awards. The recognition highlights Calvert’s long-term commitment to operational efficiency and lower-emission logistics. This commitment centers on reducing CO₂ emissions across the value chain.

This year’s submission showcased coordinated efforts across Outokumpu’s supply chain, environmental, operations, and logistics teams. The teams worked to provide customers with a more sustainable delivery option. Where feasible, finished products were shipped by rail instead of truck. This shift reduced logistics emissions by more than 10,800 tons of CO₂ in 2024, strengthening both climate performance and supply-chain resilience.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Outokumpu’s Calvert mill has received a Thoroughbred Sustainability Partner Award, having been recognized every year since the program’s launch in 2022. Calvert’s sustainability work was further acknowledged this year with its third consecutive Environmental Stewardship Award from Partners for Environmental Progress. This award recognized continuous efforts to minimize environmental impacts at the site.
