Outokumpu will deliver special stainless quarto plates to the new World Trade Center transit terminal, in New York at Ground zero. The company will deliver around 340mt of stainless steel quarto plates to Cimolai Spa of Italy, one of the main steel manufacturers for the new World Trade Center transit terminal. Cimolai is responsible for the fabrication of the lower supporting structure in the new transit center. Outokumpu will produce the plates at their quarto plate unit in Degerfors, Sweden. They will be welded between carbon steel components and act as a thermal barrier to stop excessive length expansion and tension in the lower supporting part of the structure. The use of quarto plates produced from Outokumpu’s proprietary high strength LDX 2101 duplex stainless steel results in thinner, stronger and more cost efficient design in the construction. LDX 2101® was chosen as a result of its superior mechanical and corrosion resistance properties compared to standard austenitic stainless steel grades.
