Mexico and US steel exports fall

BNamericas, the business intelligence tool for Latin America, is reporting that the steel exports (including stainless steel) from South America to the United States has declined 9.7% in March compared to the same month in 2014.
According to US Census Bureau data, the region exported 458,105 tons down from 507,074 tons with Mexico leading the decline, with exports down to 160,309 tons from 237,182 tons. That was partly offset by increased Brazilian exports of 287,586 tons up from 239,125 tons.
Latin American exports totalled 667,643 tons in February. By value, Latin American steel exports to the US were worth USD 342 million in March, down from USD 398 million. Mexico accounted for USD 149 million down from USD 218 million with
Brazil’s exports worth USD 174 million up from USD 139 million. Argentina exported 8,111t worth USD 16.9 million down from 19,022 tons worth USD 31.8 million.
The decline in Mexican steel exports came as Asian economies increased sales in the US, with South Korea, China, Taiwan and India all seeing substantial rises, and Japanese shipments increasing marginally.
