Material selection for offshore: Part two

Material selection for piping systems is performed in the early stages of a project, before details are known about process parameters, dimensions and layout. To select materials with acceptable performance properties is a relatively simple task. However, when project economy and schedule is taken into consideration, the task gets more complicated.

In the June 2017 issue of Stainless Steel World Americas, John Ole Gjerp, Senior Principal Engineer Materials Technology at Aker Solutions, proposes a tool for comparison of candidate materials, based on the major cost contributors for an installed piping system.
