Kansas could be home of wind energy foundry

Fundiciones Wind Energy Casting (Fundiciones W.E.C.) is considering building a USD 40 million ductile iron foundry in Hutchinson, Kansas, to supply parts for Siemens wind turbine manufacturing plant. Fundiciones W.E.C. is a metal casting company specializing in producing components for users that are building and servicing wind turbines. Currently the company operates one foundry near Itziar, where it produces up to 14,000mt/yr of castings ranging from 2 to 20mt. Its products include turbine engine frames and rotor housings. Siemens Wind Power USA operates a 300,000sq/ft nacelle assembly facility in Hutchinson, which includes warehousing and quality control functions. Fundiciones W.E.C. recently secured an air permit from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for its project. In order to qualify for certain federal grants that would help finance the project, the plant would have to be complete and in operation by January 2013.
