Hard Bop an icon in San Francisco

The sculpture named Hard Bop, designed by Mr John Atkin, an internationally recognized artist, has been unveiled in Fillmore Plaza San Francisco as part of a regeneration project to integrate the space into a place where friends and the community can meet and socialize. In the sculpture’s own words Hard Bop is made from a series of elegant garment template forms, cognizant of human identity, linked together as a vertical, flowing movement. The concept of movement was derived from the notion of musical rhythm and in particular the movement of a conductor’s baton, as it slices its way rhythmically through the air, guiding passages of play. The material used in this particular sculpture was stainless steel, which has beautiful optical qualities that capitalize on the vitality of the space, reflecting the surrounding streetscape, stimulating memories associated with the heritage factors of the locale, evoking concepts of identity through the use of forms, materials, colour, lighting and historical context.
