Foster Wheeler wins molybdenum refinery contract

A subsidiary of Foster Wheeler’s Global Engineering and Construction Group has been awarded a contract for engineering, procurement and related services for a grassroots molybdenum refinery. The facility will be the largest of its kind and located near
Mejillones in northern Chile.

MOLYB Ltda., an affiliate of CODELCO, the Chilean copper and molybdenum concentrate producer, awarded the contract. The terms of the deal have not yet been released, but the contract value will be included in the company’s third quarter bookings for 2013 and the work on the facility is due for completion in the second quarter of 2015.

The refinery is anticipated to process and refine 16,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of molybdenum feedstock from a variety of CODELCO copper concentrator plants. Molybdenum is often used in electronics, specialty steels like stainless, petroleum refineries and the aerospace industry.

“This latest award is a further important step in the extension of our Minerals and Metals track record and in the further development of our already excellent working relationship with CODELCO,” said Dave Lawson, President and Global Leader of Minerals and Metals, Foster Wheeler AG. “This award reflects CODELCO’s continued confidence in the quality of our technical expertise in minerals processing and our project execution.”
