The Latin American Steel Association (Alacero) has launched its eighth annual contest Design in Steel for Architecture Students of Latin America.
This year, participating teams will work on constructive solutions in steel (including stainless steel), related to community life and sports. The selected topic is “Social and Sports Center” and is meant to encourage students to improve lives through a sports facility that fosters exercise and facilitates social activities for people of all ages, especially in non-affluent areas.
The contest so far has gathered almost 400 teams from 143 universities across nine South American countries and is an initiative of Alacero to promote the benefits of steel and hopefully promote its usage among future professionals.
The competition itself is divided into two stages. During the first National stage, participating countries (Argentina, Brazil,Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Dominican Republic and Venezuela) will choose the best local project. Then in the second stage, the winner team of each country will travel to Buenos Aires to participate in the Finals that will take place during the Latin American Steel Congress, Alacero-56, in November 2015.
A jury of architects representing all participating countries will make the final decision and select the winners. The first prize is 10,000 dollars (6,000 dollars for the team and 4,000 for the University).
