In his article, Material selection for offshore piping systems: cost aspects (Part one of two), John Ole Gjerp, senior principal engineer of Materials Technology at Aker Solutions, talks about how the selection of materials for piping systems is performed in the early stages of a project, even before details about process parameters, dimensions, and layout, are known.
To select materials with acceptable performance properties is a relatively simple task, Gjerp explains in the article. However, when project economy and schedule is taken into consideration, the task gets more complicated. This paper proposes a tool for comparison of candidate materials, based on the major cost contributors for an installed piping system.
