Corrosion under insulation at high temperatures

As a principal of an engineering company recently stated, “We specify stainless steel when we do not want to spend money on coatings.” This statement resonates with many facility owners given the excellent corrosion resistance of types 304 and 316 austenitic stainless steels in most atmospheric and ambient temperature services. 

However, when assets are fabricated with stainless steels intended for use in acidic and chloride-containing environments, they are still susceptible to many modes of corrosion. This is especially true when these aggressive exposure conditions are paired with high temperatures.
