Construction on ThyssenKrupp meltshop begins

Construction on ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA’s meltshop in Alabama is set to commence. The meltshop, designed to produce stainless steel slabs, will consist of a 160 ton electric arc furnace, 180 ton AOD converter (Argon Oxygen Decarburization) and a 1900mm continuous caster. The meltshop will have a capacity of 900,000 to 1 million tons/yr. The stainless steel slabs it produces will be rolled into hot band on ThyssenKrupp Steel USA’s hot strip mill. 340,000 tons of hotband will go to ThyssenKrupp Mexinox in San Luis Potosí, Mexico each year. The cold rolling mill will transform another 525,000 tons per year into 175,000 tons of white hot-rolled and 350,000 tons of stainless cold-rolled.
