Weldcraft adds WP-17 series of TIG torches

Weldcraft has added the WP-17 Series of air-cooled TIG torches, designed for welding on thin-to-medium gauge materials, to its line of products. The series is made up of six different styles of TIG torches, including models with gas valves and flex necks. The torches offer 150-amp DC and 115-amp AC welding capabilities at 60% duty cycle, and are available with 12.5 and 25ft, one or two-piece, cable lengths.

REpower signs wind project contracts

REpower Systems AG has signed two contracts for Canadian wind projects. As per the contract, the company will cover the delivery, installation and maintenance of 55 REpower MM92 CCV turbines specifically designed for cold climates. 40 turbines will go to the Saint-Robert-Bellarmin wind farm located between the cities of Lac-Mégantic and Saint-Georges-de-Beauce in Quebec. The remaining 15 turbines are to be installed at the Ganaraska and Whispering Woods wind farms in Oshawa, Ontario.

Pflanz, recipient of Bert Krisher Scholarship

Ulrich Pflanz has received the 2011 MTI Bert Krisher Memorial Scholarship from The Materials Technology Institute (MTI). Pflanz recently earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Surface Technology and Materials Science at the Aalen University in Germany. The award was presented by MTI Board Members Robert Sinko of Eastman Chemicals and Paul Manning from Haynes International at NACE’s Corrosion 2011 Conference in Houston, Texas.

Harshman succeeds Hassey at ATI

Allegheny Technologies Incorporated has appointed Richard J. Harshman as the new Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of ATI. He will succeed L. Patrick Hassey who has retired. Harshman has also been elected to serve as a member of ATI's Board of Directors. Harshman has been with the company for 33 years; he became CFO of ATI in 2000.   

Pursall to retire from Electralloy

Peter Pursall will retire from Electralloy effective 30 April 2011. Upon his retirement, Electralloy will begin a strategic restructuring of their sales and customer service efforts in Eastern Canada. The restructuring will address growing markets in Eastern Canada for Aerospace, Nuclear, Oil and Gas, Forging, Foundry and Steel Service Center applications. Electralloy’s Eastern Canadian customers will be serviced by Kathy Shumsky, Manager of Forged Products

Pellet plant, pipeline project in Brazil

The partners of Samarco have approved the USD 3.5 billion Fourth Pellet Plant Project at Samarco, Brazil. The expansion will increase Samarco iron ore pellet production capacity by 8.3 million to 30.5 million tns/yr. First pellet production is expected in the first half of calendar year 2014. The investment includes additional mining capacity and a third concentrator at the Germano mine

CenterLine wins 2011 Business Excellence Award

CenterLine (Windsor) Ltd. has received the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce 2011 Business Excellence Award in the product innovation category. The company is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and supplying products and services for welding, metal forming, and cold spray applications in the automotive, mass transit, aerospace, and defense industries.

US-based Constellation and Exelon have announced merger plans.

Vestas to supply turbines in Canada

Vestas has received a 104MW order for 58 V90-1.8MW turbines for a wind energy project in Canada. As per the contract, Vestas will deliver and commission the turbines, along with a 10-year service and maintenance agreement. Delivery is scheduled for mid-2012 and commissioning expected in the fall of 2012. All of the blades and nacelles for this project will be manufactured at Vestas' manufacturing facilities in Colorado.

Vale may reduce stake in steel mill JV

Vale is in talks with two South Korean firms to reduce its stake in a joint venture to build an integrated steel mill in Brazil. Vale's stake may decrease from 50% to 30% in the second phase of construction of the plant, while POSCO and Dongkuk Steel could increase their stakes to 35% each. Currently, POSCO and Dongkuk Steel hold a 20% and 30% stake in the project, respectively.
