Canada: turbine overhaul at hydroelectric plant

British Columbia (BC) Hydro has awarded a contract to Voith Hydro for the complete overhaul of five Francis turbine units for the Gordon M. Shrum hydroelectric power plant in British Columbia, one of the largest turbine replacement projects BC Hydro has awarded so far. As part of the contract, Voith Hydro will supply five new 310MW turbines, site construction, installation and start-up. The overhaul is expected to improve unit availability and reliability and increase the rated output of each turbine from 266MW to 310MW. The first unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2012 and one turbine will be replaced each subsequent year until all five are in service by 2017.
