Bayer to build five plants in China

Bayer MaterialScience will invest EUR 110 million to construct five new downstream facilities in China by 2012. The facilities will consist of three polyurethanes systems houses, a new polycarbonate sheet facility and a polycarbonate color compounding and design center. Each facility will be strategically located adjacent to major customers in Qingdao, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Shanghai. With these projects, Bayer will have a network covering the main geographical areas of the country. The polyurethanes systems houses will be developed in Shanghai, Qingdao and Chongqing. The new color compounding and design center will be constructed in Chongqing and the sheet facility will be built in Guangzhou. Currently, Asia-Pacific accounts for 60% of the world’s polycarbonate production and China accounts for the majority of this demand. They are viewed as the main factor for this growth due to the increasing importance of the domestic consumer appliance, electronic, automotive and rail industries.
