AWMI announces 2019 to 2020 leadership

Sonya Malvick has been elected president of the Association of Women in the Metal Industries (AWMI) for 2019 to 2020. 

A 25-year veteran of the steel industry, Malvick followed in her father’s footsteps and started her career working with him at Zalk Joseph Fabricators LLC, before moving into the steel service centre industry. There, she held positions in inside sales, outside sales, and general sales. Malvick currently works as an outside sales representative for Olympic Steel Inc., based in Gary, Indiana in the U.S.

“I am thrilled to be moving into the role of international president working alongside some great leaders as we look to ‘make change’ during my upcoming term,” said Malvick. “In this ever-changing industry, succession planning, communication, leadership training and technology will be big parts of our goals for this next term. AWMI’s four cornerstones ‘mentor, grow, network and educate’ will be in the forefront as we look to increase both individual, and corporate membership goals. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for both myself personally and this organization.”

Mary Wardle, who has worked in the steel industry for more than 36 years, has been elected as VP of AWMI. Wardle currently works as sales manager of Steelscape LLC’s western region and is based in Northern California. 

“I am honoured to be nominated and elected to serve AWMI as vice president for the next two years,” said Wardle. “I look forward to working with Sonya Malvick as we continue to support our individual and corporate memberships.”

Anna Tompkins and Sian Marcone were elected as marketing chair and mentoring chairs, respectively. Tompkins is currently director of marketing at Rockville, Maryland-based Atlantic Recycling Group, while Marcone is marketing manager at Pittsburgh-based Arconic. 

Elections took place at the AWMI’s 2018 annual conference in St. Petersburg, Florida in November.
