Atlantic Nickel resumes production in Brazil

Atlantic Nickel, a Brazilian company that operates in the activities of exploration, mining, processing, and commercialization of nickel concentrate, has resumed commercial production at its Santa Rita mine in the northeastern state of Bahia, Brazil. The company has also announced that the first sale of concentrate was shipped in January 2020.

After operations were halted in 2015, the plans to restart activities were set in motion when Appian Capital Advisory acquired the mine in 2018. The Santa Rita operation, which is one of the worldÂ’s largest open-pit nickel sulfide mines, is a fully-permitted, past-producing nickel mine with an estimated annual production capacity of 6.5 million tons of nickel in sulfide concentrate. To date, Atlantic Nickel has produced more than 11,000 tons of nickel concentrate.

An alloying element, nickel enhances certain properties in stainless steel such as weldability, and increases corrosion resistance.
