The article, Duplex stainless steel tanks and tank bottoms providing both cost and leak control written by John Grocki, Consultant at Advantage Resources Consulting, LLC, discusses how stainless steel tanks have always been a viable solution for fluid storage, and the duplex materials with equivalent corrosion resistance and increased mechanical properties have been used extensively. More recently, the duplex materials have been considered for repair and refurbishing options.
For instance, one way to reduce the incidence of tank bottom leaks is to construct or re-construct tanks with a stainless steel bottom. Both internal and external corrosion could be significantly reduced, offering life cycle cost savings for maintenance, Grocki suggests. The first option is to retrofit a new stainless bottom into a storage tank with a worn-out bottom. The second is new construction, which can also take advantage of the stainless bottom concept. In either case, the duplex stainless steels offer advantages in properties, performance, and cost.
