In the first of their two-part article Hyper-duplex stainless steels, material experts, Guocai Chai and Pasi Kangas from Sandvik Research & Development, talk about how the oil and gas industry moving further offshore into deeper waters, brings the challenge and need for stronger, lighter, and more corrosion-resistant materials.
Today, the use of duplex stainless steels, such a Sandvik SAF 2507 (UNS S32750), has become commonplace for meeting such challenges, they explain. Most recently, the development of the modern duplex family continues with the introduction of new high-alloy hyper-duplex steels that deliver PRE values up to 50. This opens new possibilities for the oil and gas industry to design even lighter subsea infrastructure that is stronger and more corrosion resistant.
The article looks into when to use such materials, what material challenges this new breed of steels help you overcome, and so on.
