In his market report, High performance materials for coal-fired power plants, Robert McIlvaine, the President of The McIlvaine Company, describes how as countries around the world strive to be more environmentally-friendly, it is understandable why the coal-fired power industry has turned its focus on supercritical (SC) and ultra-supercritical (USC) plant designs.
SC and USC power plants use less coal per megawatt-hour, and therefore reduce emissions such as carbon dioxide and mercury, and have proven to have higher efficiency, resulting in lower fuel costs per megawatt, McIlvaine explains. In order to run safely, SC and USC designs require highly-resistant materials that will withstand hazardous services.
