AES to build 150 MW wind farm

US-based AES Corporation has entered into an agreement with Pakistan’s ministry of water and power to build a USD 375 million wind power generation plant. The project, to be finished in 2012, is designed to produce 150 MW of electricity close to Karachi, Pakistan’s largest industrial city. Pakistan’s coastal belt, spread over hundreds of kilometres, is very windy throughout the year. According to rough estimates, the country has a potential to generate up to 50 GW of electricity by exploiting just this source. The project, to be set up at three sites in the Gharo Corridor in Thatta district of Sindh, is expected to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuel and oil.
