ArcelorMittal saves energy

ArcelorMittal received a grant from the US Department of Energy to fund their energy efficiency project at the Indiana Harbor steel mill. The Departments fund commitment of USD 155 million under the American Recovery and Investment Act was matched by the company. Scheduled for completion in 12 to 15 months, the USD 63.2 million boiler project will generate 38MW of power, decreasing the company’s dependence on buying electricity. The Indiana Harbor east plant’s No.7 blast furnace will supply gas to the boiler from a flare, to co-generate steam and electricity. The new boiler will eliminate the practice of releasing blast furnace gas through a flare stack. Greenhouse gas emissions like carbon monoxide will be reduced by 340,000nt annually.
