Vale makes offer to striking workers

The company that owns the Voisey’s Bay nickel mine in northern Labrador has made a new offer to unionized workers in an effort to end the 5 and a half month strike at the mine. It’s been almost a year since nickel giant Vale Inco and the workers sat down for face-to-face bargaining. Preliminary talks in early January went nowhere. The company recently emailed an offer to the union. The company had been looking for a three-year wage freeze and a roll back of the bonus it pays to employees. Officials with the Steelworkers Union that represents the striking miners said that the union’s bargaining committee will meet to have a look at the latest offer. But at least one union official also said that the company‘s latest offer looks a lot like the company’s last one. The company has said it is willing to sit-down with the union to discuss their latest offer.
