US military increases its wind power

The Tooele Army Depot, located near Salt Lake City, Utah will be increasing its renewable energy generating capacity by installing a wind turbine at its site.

Juhl Energy Inc. has been contracted by the US Army Corps. of Engineers Sacramento District to develop, construct and install a 1.5 MW to 2 MW machine in a deal worth USD $5.5 million. Juhl will be joined by Aegis Renewable Energy and Icenogle Construction Management Inc, with Juhl acting as the EPC contractor.

The Tooele Army Depot Wind Project is currently in the development stage and is scheduled to begin sometime in late 2014 or early 2015.
Corey Juhl, vice-president of development for Juhl Energy, has said, “Like the US Armed Services, we are seeing several large industrial and commercial energy users that are looking to become more energy independent, while saving money at the same time. In most cases, the installation of an on-site renewable energy project such as wind, solar or co-generation is a great way for a large energy user to lock in the bulk of their energy costs for many years.”
